A most terrible case of the Star Wars

The Tale of Lightsabre the Blue

Remember the time I read Tattúínárdǿla saga and basically went "I want fic"? Spoilers: I wrote the fic and it's in continuity with that.

Summary: The author posits that the Old Norse manuscript recently found in the Bay of Douarnenez belongs to the same corpus as the Icelandic Tattúínárdǿla saga.

[personal profile] dolorosa_12 was kind enough to beta for me and help me with the academical notes. I have now written fic beta-ed by someone with a more-than-semi relevant PhD.

Some kind souls helped me translate "Starkiller" into Old Norse ("Stjǫrnubani") and I used Viking Lady and Behind the Name as references for personal names. As much as possible I tried to pick names that had relevant meanings.

And with this I qualified for "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy" for [community profile] femmeremix so I signed up for that.

A most terrible case of the Star Wars

Fic things

I've just realised I forgot to mention a couple of things about Five Seasons in Latveria, the Layla Miller + Doctor Doom gen fic I posted last Saturday. (Honestly, none of the notes I post on here (as opposed to Ao3) are that important, but I do like talking about my writing.)

Ilinca makes an appearance in this fic, she last appeared on Doctor Doom's staff in Retrograde (also featuring Layla Miller). I have some headcanons and backstory for her, but nothing set in stone, mostly she exists to fulfill all my non-Doombot minion related needs.

It also fulfills the "That Moment (incident / chapter / episode) in detail" prompt from this bingo card I got over two years ago you shut up I am on top of things.

Collapse )

I'll take prompts if you have them, but no guarantees/some of these are already in progress/etc.

One of these days, I will get better at not getting anxiety about replying to comments on Ao3. Today is not this day.

(I don't know why I thought making a deal with myself about how I had to post a comment on a fic for every comment on my fic I replied to would help matters, but it kind of has? So long as I remember what fics I read when it comes down to comment time -- and I often blank. I am a failboat.)

I do read and appreciate every single comment I get and I will get back to them, even if takes me a while.

I wanted to write a fic about Teal'c watching The Force Awakens (with Vala) for [community profile] starwarsflashmeme 's prompt of "Alien" because Teal'c is canonically a giant Star Wars nerd (who likes the prequel, even) and Finn's arc would speak to him: loyal soldier of galaxy spanning colonising power (Goa'uld/First Order) rebels against said colonising power following a meeting with a scrappy underdog (SG1/Poe) and ends up joining the organisation said underdog is part of (SGC/Resistance) to fight The Good Fight TM.

Vala is there because she wants to know what the fuss is all about.

Alas, I needed to rewatch some Stargate and find a Teal'c voice and it was Eurovision, so it didn't happen. For amnesty, maybe?

Eurovision 2016 3: REVENGE OF THE GLITTER

Unpopular Eurovision opinion: I liked the UK song from last year.

Belgium: Bored.
Czech Republic: It's cute.
Netherlands: I like the clock floor.
Azerbaidjan: I like it! Nice lightshow and costumes.
Hungary: Whistling! And one the drummers from Mad Max.
Italy: It's cute, but I like the Italian parts more than the English ones.
Isreal: This is 100% what Billy Kaplan's Eurovision entry would look like, between the hair and the lyrics.
Bulgaria: I LOVE IT! (It is 100% a Pride song, idc.)
Sweden: Eh.
Germany: WHAT.
France: I like the rhymes. (Also, time to play "how many locations in the postcard can I name", lmao.)
Poland: Meh.
Interlude: ???
Australia: Nice dress! Great voice and glitter too.
Serbia: Her dress suits her perfectly. And the song is great.
Lithuania: How very boys band (in a good way!).
Croatia: Glitter dress!
Russia: The wings are awesome -- the staging is pretty great in general, tbh.
Spain: How many contestants have this hairstyle.
Latvia: It's okay.
Ukraine: I'm crying and the staging is great.
Malta: It's fine.
Georgia: My least favourite.
Latveria: Fuck the haters, this one's great.
Austria: Conspiracy theory time, this lovely song is about the refugiee crisis.
Wales: Put some effort in your costuming, guys.
Armenia: I think I liked this one better in the semi.

Unexpected Ian McKellen is unexpected!

My favourites: Italy, Israel, Bulgaria, Australia, Cyprus, Serbia, Ukraine, Latveria and Austria.

Also, I wrote a fic:

A most terrible case of the Star Wars

I wrote some Star Wars

It was recently [community profile] maythe4thbewithyou and I wrote three fics, much like I got three fics.

I was assigned to [archiveofourown.org profile] lionessvalenti and I wrote them two fics.

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Canon Divergence - Revenge of the Sith, Post-Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Summary: Sometimes the war slows down, just a little.
This is not the scene from this AU I had originally planned to write, but rereading the letter my original idea didn't fit with the optional details. I think I'll end up writing the story of this verse at some point -- I do want to write a Padmé/Obi-Wan/Anakin fic.

Also guest-starring: Sabé and Obi-Wan being sort-of friends. It is my absolute headcanon that these two are friends. I have a fic in the works to that effect. (You're very surprised I'm writing friendship fic, I can tell.)

Characters: Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Summary: Padmé Amidala is accompanied by Obi-Wan Kenobi to Naboo and Anakin Skywalker is the galaxy's worst detective.
This is the other fic I wrote [archiveofourown.org profile] lionessvalenti -- I was going to post this as my assignment, but somehow manage to run out of time and be able to finish it for the assignment deadline. I did finish it before May 4 though, so I posted it as a treat.

It's the AU in which Obi-Wan and Anakin switch places in Attack of the Clones. (Also included: Sabé and Obi-Wan being friends. Also also included, an Eurovision joke.)

The conversation with my beta about this fic included such gems as "is this slice-y-of-life-y enough?" and "I told you Anakin was my go-to guy for comedy".

Title from Shakespeare's Tempest. From Ariel's "Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes,
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change,
into something rich and strange" speech in act I, scene 2. (I believe this is the third fic I've written with a title from The Tempest, but the first one posted.)

Summary: Rey finds an unlikely tomb to rob.

The third fic I wrote was for [archiveofourown.org profile] ancarett.

It was kind of last minute, because I had managed to miss that someone had requested an ANCIENT EGYPT AU until May 3, but apparently I am mad enough that I can pull off a short Ancient Egypt graverobber AU in less than a day.

It's not even a generic Ancient Egypt AU! It is set in a very specific time period -- could those end notes have been even longer? You bet your ass they could have been. But I figured that a) nobody reads Star wars fic for in-depth explanation of royal titulary in Ancient Egypt and b) for the most part my knowledge of Ancient Egypt is filtered through French, which can make it very frustrating as not every term that is translated nor every name transliterated the same way (Moyen Empire != Middle Empire, Moyen Empire = Middle Kingdom, Akhénaton = Akhenaten, etc). Special shout out to the non-Horus/Horus of Gold names, you suck, I hate you, please pick one translation, thanks.

Tomorrow marks the start of Eurovision, so that's what I'm doing this week. Eurovision.

[archiveofourown.org profile] asadeseki translated Shiny Makeover Version into Chinese as Shiny Makeover Version 容光焕发. I feel so honoured!

Shiny Makeover Version is the Doom/Tony ficlet I wrote for [personal profile] sineala last [community profile] fandom_stocking . According to my Ao3 stats, it's also the fic I've written that has the most kudos. :O (Clearly I need to write more Doom/Tony.)

(I'd feel remiss if I didn't point out that today, May 5, is both Revenge of the Fifth and le Retour du Jeudi, for maximum Star Wars.)

Reading kitten!

I've been writing a lot of Star Wars fic lately and have come to the conclusion that I structure them slightly differently than I do the rest of my writing. It's not anything obvious or that anyone but me would notice, but it is there.

It's a bit more circular, a bit more mirrored and relies a lot on tripled patterns.

It's also more visual, but I think that's a consequence of me having fallen back into the tried-and-true (for me) habit of visualising things like comic pages. It's a thought pattern I occasionally fall back into, not least because I do a lot of drawings of whatever I'm writing at any given time (one sketch a day is hard to come up with ideas for, just saying) so the combination of words and ideas lends itself logically to switching to comics mode.

I like comics mode, don't get me wrong. It allows me to see things from a different angle and that can be very useful.

It's just that comics and plain text are not the same medium, and sometimes I run into problems like trying to translate "this scene is a double-page spread" into prose.

I think I have something that might work, though. It's a difference of emphasis.

The difference between a single panel in the right uppermost corner of the right-hand page (right-up-right and left-down-left tend to be the most overlooked areas of a double page spread when reading left-to-right) and a double-page spread is not the difference between:
His lightsaber flew into the girl's hand.
The Force sang like it had not sang in years; it was a deep, resounding note that dug into your bones and echoed there.

It reminded Anakin of Mustafar, the perfect clarity of it.

Out there in the forest, out there in the snow, his ancient lightsaber, the accursed, bloodied thing, had flown through the air into the girl's hand and the Force sang.
but it's pretty similar.

The actual, physical ACTION is exactly the same (and it's also exactly the same as what happens in the movie, starting at 00:56). What's different is the emphasis put on this moment.

In movie form, that emphasis takes the form of a wide-shot and a swelling soundtrack. In comics form, it's a one-panel double-page spread. In written form, it's -- more words, basically.

Not just any words either, but extended metaphor. Here it's the-Force-as-music, which is how I tend to write the-Force-as-perceived-by-Anakin but it doesn't have to be. A bit of repetition on occasions doesn't hurt and it's no coincidence it both starts and ends with "the Force sang". (I'm also really fond of "the accursed, bloodied thing" for reasons.)

Watch me have to cut this because it doesn't fit the tone of the rest of the fic, lmao.

I was having a bad day of the "well i might as well just quit everything and fandom especially since nothing i do ever pleases anyone does anyone even like plotty fic no they do not why do i bother i know i can't do shippy i am a failure as a fan" type but then I drew some stuff and watched Mission Cléopatre so I'm feeling better. Not great, but better.

(Just so you don't worry: I'll be gone tomorrow evening and should catch up on the -- has it been a week already? -- week or so of posts and comments I missed soon.)

ANYWAY! Upcoming fannish stuff I'm excited about!

ROGUE ONE! I still have a most terrible case of the Star Wars, lmao (you should see my WIP folder). Things I got out of this trailer: Jyn Erso! MON MOTHMA! Jyn Erso/Mon Mothma! Admiral Fancy Cape! Jyn Erso in Imperial uniform! Voice-over guy! SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

The things I want from this movie are basically the same and I'm really hoping fandom delivers on both the femslash and villain/hero shipping. OR BOTH. Both is good. (A fandom person can dream of Imperial!Jyn/Rebel!Mon, okay. Let me liiiiiiiiiiiiive)

I decided it was time I got a Star Wars icon, so now I do (on DW).

DID YOU KNOW CLOAK AND DAGGER ARE GETTING A TV SHOW? Now you do. I am so happy about this, I love Cloak and Dagger a lot. They were awesome in Ults Spidey. I enjoy seeing them show up in any/everything. (The TV show won't go that way, but 1602 Witch Hunter Angela has THE BEST interpretation of their origin story.)

ALSO I really like the Captain America: Civil War - In Good Company featurette.

And this seems as good a time as any to mention the fics I wrote for Bad Bang. I am basically TOO EARNEST FOR BAD BANG, sadly, so they're less crack than crack taken seriously:

Collapse )

The story of how these fics got written is kind of convoluted (and the remix chains on Ao3 are not much help), but it all started in a discussion about Padmé's favourite colour, hence the insistence on MAGENTA NOT PURPLE >:[

Quit killing people, that's high profile

Cornelia is Scipio's padawan

I mentionned the Hannibal/Scipio Star Wars fusion twice already. It's grown a helluva lot of plot (five words: Supreme Chancellor Padmé Amidala Naberrie), but I think I finally have the bare bones of an ending. Of course now I have to figure out how to get there.

And finish watching the Clone Wars cartoon.

Anyway, it took me until today to realise I could make Cornelia not just Aemilia's daughter, but also Scipio's padawan, even though it seems so obvious in retrospect. This realisation and the fact that I don't actually need to with every single plotline ever raised in Star Wars canon (plus figuring out how to deal with Order 66) ended up netting me what I have of my ending.

I realise vey few people are interested in Hannibal, Scipio and their peeps fannishly/the way I am, but I've been wanting to write an IN SPACE AU for ages and at least I might lure some readers looking for Star Wars longfic? Also, lightsabers, man. Lightsabers are awesome. (And there's apparently a planet named Scipio in Star Wars canon and now I can't not.)

It's going to take me a while to write this though, because it's grown so much plot I'm going to need spreadsheets (plural) to keep track of everything and everyone. I may need to colour-code stuff. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing (I'm trying something new with how I approach the outlining), but at least my plotting skills are getting an excellent work-out.

It's about grief and mourning. It was a lot harder to write than I expected (/is an idiot).

I had guesses about my two writers. I guessed right for [personal profile] minutia_r writing Delphi Falls. I thought Isis might have written Olden Times, but then they had the first comment, so I was confused. I gave it 50/50 on Nightsmistress and Merit (based 100% on who I knew had read the books). It was merit.
